Car Ferries from England / UK to France & Europe.

Dover is geographically the closest UK port to the continent and, as the world's busiest ferry port, may justifiably be described as 'the gateway to England'. Dover to Calais is the shortest cross channel ferry crossing between England and France, typically taking just 90mins, or the Dover to Dunquerque car ferry takes just 15mins more. As well as the quickest, Dover has the most frequent ferry sailings, and usually short waiting times.

Dover Ferry Operators

Dover - Calais

This is the most popular, and the ‘traditional’ cross channel ferry route, whisking you and your car from England to France in 90mins - just enough time to grab a snack on board and visit the open air decks to view the white cliffs of Dover. There are two companies sailing this route.

P&O Ferries also make 46 sailings per day on the Dover - Calais ferry route. New for 2009, P&O have introduced ‘best fare sailings’ so you can beat the credit crunch, and still enjoy a holiday on the continent.  Click on the banner on the left to get a free EuroDisney ticket when you book a ferry crossing with P&O this month.

Dover - Dunquerque

An alternative to Calais, Dunquerque is just a few miles further East close to France’s border with Belgium. The crossing is 15mins longer than the Calais route.

Norfolkline's brand new fleet of car ferries, take more than 2 million passengers each year over the English Channel and Irish Sea (with Irish Sea Ferries). There are 12 Norfolkline ferry crossings between Dover and Dunkerque in France every day with crossings taking only 1 hour 45 minutes. The ferries are more modern than those running the Dover - Calais route, and their interior resembles a hotel more than a ferry.

Driving directions to Dover ferry port:

All the cross-channel ferries depart from Dover Eastern Docks which can be accessed by either the M2 and A2, or the M20 and A20. In both cases, simply drive to the end of the motorway and follow the A-road at the end of it. Both the A2 and the A20 lead directly to the Eastern Docks in Dover. Note that the A20 passes through Dover on the way to the port, and can become very congested at peak times.
